What Are Gynecologic Cancers?

Gynecologic cancer is any cancer that starts in a woman's reproductive organs. These cancers happen when abnormal cells grow and spread. Screenings like your annual well woman visit are so important because gynecologic cancers sometimes go unnoticed in their early stages. These include:

Begins in the cells of the lower end of the uterus, or the cervix. Cervical cancer occurs most often in women under 50.

Begins in the inner lining of the uterus. The uterus, or womb, is the pear-shaped organ where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant.

Begins in the ovaries, located on either side of the uterus. Most ovarian cancers develop after menopause.

A rare cancer that begins in the muscle and supporting tissues of the uterus, or womb.

Begins in the vagina, the organ that starts at the cervix and opens at the vulva. Vaginal cancer is rare, and mainly occurs in older women.

Begins in the vulva, or outer part of the female genital organs. It occurs most often in older women.

Screenings and vaccines for cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in women under 50. You can help avoid cervical cancer with regular screenings. Two screening tests can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early:

Pap test, which is an annual screening test that shows cell changes on the cervix.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) test, which looks for HPV that causes cell changes.

The best way to prevent cervical cancer is to have the HPV vaccine as an adolescent. Centers for Diseases Control guidance recommends HPV vaccination for everyone up to age 26. Some older adults can benefit from vaccination, too. Talk to your provider about whether the HPV vaccine is right for you.

Gynecologic Cancer Diagnosis

A Pap test shows signs of cervical cancer. But there's no screening test for other gynecologic cancers. And symptoms often don't appear until the later stages of the disease. It's important to pay attention to any small changes in your body.

Your doctor may use blood work, imaging or a biopsy to help diagnose gynecologic cancer. Imaging could include a CT scan, MRI or an ultrasound.

Gynecological cancer treatments

Your treatment depends on what kind of cancer you have and how far it has spread. We offer chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Additionally, we offer specialized treatments such as:

Robotic surgery, which can replace the majority of open surgeries, leading to a shorter recovery period.
High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, which is a type of radiation therapy that uses highly localized doses of radiation delivered to the tumor quickly, limiting exposure to healthy tissue.

Our gynecologic oncologists are highly involved in the community and frequently provide lectures at both national and international conferences and educational forums.

Dr. Lambrou serves as Luminis Health's first Chief of Gynecologic Oncology. He has become widely recognized as an expert and instructor in robotic gynecologic surgery. Prior to joining Luminis Health, Dr. Lambrou served as chief of gynecologic oncology and director of robotic minimally invasive surgery for one of the largest health care systems in South Florida.
