Every five years, Morris Powell of Anne Arundel County undergoes a colonoscopy due to his medical history. During his most recent screening, his physician discovered a large rectal polyp that required specialized care. He was referred to Dr. Sanmeet Singh, Medical Director of Endoscopy at Luminis Health.
After evaluating the lesion, Dr. Singh recommended removing it using rectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), an advanced technique that allows physicians to remove lesions in one piece without the need for traditional surgery.
“ESD allows us to remove large or complex polyps completely while avoiding major abdominal surgery,” explains Dr. Singh. “For this patient, it meant definitive treatment of the lesion without hospitalization, surgical incisions, or a prolonged recovery.”
The procedure was performed endoscopically, meaning everything was done through a flexible scope, eliminating the need for open or laparoscopic surgery.
For Powell, the explanation and planning helped ease any anxiety before the procedure.
"Dr. Singh took the time to explain everything clearly, so I knew exactly what to expect," Powell says. "He’s good at what he does, and the whole process went smoothly."
Because the lesion was removed using this minimally invasive technique, Powell was able to recover quickly and return to his normal routine. He continues his work as a building supervisor for Prince George’s County Public Schools and spends his free time enjoying one of his favorite hobbies, fishing, always looking for the next great place to cast a line.
Advanced procedures like ESD are available through the advanced endoscopy program at Luminis Health, allowing patients in the region to receive highly specialized care close to home.
