Igor Belyansky, MD, FACS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained laparoscopic surgeon with clinical interests in hernia surgery, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, esophageal surgery, complex GI surgery, antireflux procedures, surgical treatment of achalasia, and minimally invasive surgical treatment of colon cancer and solid organ pathology. He has particular research interest in quality of life outcomes after hernia surgery and is a strong proponent of patient education and informed decision prior to surgery. He is a co-investigator of several research grants and has authored 16 publications, 6 book chapters, and several invited commentaries. He frequently presents at national and international surgical meetings and has received numerous research related awards. He was the recipient of the Bassini Award by Asian Pacific Hernia Society in Hua-Hin, Thailand, and more recently he was honored at the 5th International Hernia Society meeting in New York, NY, by receiving first place for his work titled: “Factors Impacting Long-term Quality of Life Following Inguinal Hernia Repair – Development of a Predictive Algorithm.” At Carolinas Medical Center, Dr. Belyansky and his co-workers developed an electronic application, CeQOL, which aids at predicting quality of life after undergoing an inguinal hernia repair. The use of this application has been widely embraced by hernia specialists around the world. Dr. Belyansky attended the University of Maryland at College Park where he received his bachelor's degree in biochemistry. He earned his medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, VA, and completed a general surgery residency program at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Prior to coming to Anne Arundel Medical Center, Dr. Belyansky spent two years in Charlotte, NC at the prestigious Carolinas Medical Center.
