Mitchell Cahan, MD

Mitchell Cahan, MD, MBA, FACS is the Luminis Health Chair of Surgery and a member of the Acute Care Surgery team. Dr. Cahan graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and trained at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. He completed his fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. For the following 16 years, he has dedicated his expertise and leadership to the University of Massachusetts where he founded and led the acute care surgical program and played a pivotal role in shaping the department's Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program. After this, he assumed the role of chair of surgery at Mt. Auburn Hospital and the position of vice chair at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Cahan has published extensively on a range of topics including disparities in healthcare delivery, particularly in the acute care surgery population, small bowel resection following capsule endoscopy, and he has pioneered research on anticoagulation factors in hibernating black bears as a possible way of preventing thromboembolism in postoperative surgical patients.
