One Employee’s Journey to Stamp Out Smoking
Blog
One Friday, after a long day at work at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Christina Delfendahl decided she was done with cigarettes. She was literally tired of smoking after 16 years of the habit. A quick stop after work at the local pharmacy to pick up nicotine patches, and she was on her way to a new beginning.
Christina was certain it would work this time. She tried to quit the year before, first cold turkey, then by using a prescription, then a few months later using specialized gum. She also attended free employee smoking cessation counseling at AAMC. The counseling provided support and resources, and the counselors developed a personal plan to help Christina cope with the ups and downs of quitting. Before she wasn’t quite ready to kick the habit, but now this pack-a-day smoker really wanted to do it.
“I knew it would work this time because I was ready. I really wanted it. I knew it would be a few weeks with the patches and that made it easier to know there was an end not far away. It ended up taking four months with the patches before I was smoke-free,” says Christina.
Christina adds that having a support system made a difference. “My co-workers had been encouraging me to stop smoking for long time and once I decided to do it, they were there to help me stick with it,” she says.
It’s been almost one year since Christina quit and she feels great. Christina is doing CrossFit classes and enjoys having more energy, a better sense of smell and an overall healthy living lifestyle. As an added bonus, Christina set aside the money she would have spent on cigarettes, saving enough to buy a new bedroom set.

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions
Radiation therapy isn’t only for cancer. It can treat a number of non-cancerous conditions, too. At Luminis Health, our low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) program for benign conditions offers a non-invasive treatment option that’s safe and effective.
"Low-dose radiation therapy is a noninvasive option that targets the affected tissues in these benign conditions. It helps reduce cell growth, inflammation, and pain while promoting healing and preventing recurrence."
-- Dr. Amar Rewari, Chief of Radiation Oncology and Medical Director of the LDRT Program at Luminis Health.
What is Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT)?
Lose-dose radiation therapy, or low-dose radiotherapy, helps reduce pain and stiffness caused by inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the tendons, joints and other soft tissues. It uses targeted X-rays to turn on the body’s anti-inflammatory response, which helps relieve symptoms and restore movement.
Benefits of LDRT
LDRT can be a good option for people with mild, early-stage inflammatory and degenerative conditions who haven’t been helped by conservative treatments and want to avoid surgery. Treatment with low-dose radiotherapy is painless and performed quickly. Each session lasts about 10 minutes, and sessions are typically performed two to three times a week. Choosing to have low-dose radiation therapy also doesn’t eliminate surgery or other treatment options for you down the road.

Spine Surgery
From complex traumatic spine injuries to herniated disks, we have the surgical expertise to help end your back, neck and radiating pain.Common Reasons for Spine SurgeryMost back, neck and radiating pain can be treated without surgery. But when debilitating pain becomes a part of your daily life, our spine care experts can help you find relief. We can tell when you're a good candidate for spine surgery. Plus, we're experts at judging which type of surgery is likely to provide the best results in your individual situation.Conditions requiring spinal surgery may include:Arthritis/degenerative disc disease. As we get older, the cushion-like discs that separate the bones in our spine become flatter and more brittle. This can allow the bones to make slight, abnormal movements, irritating surrounding muscles, joints and nerves.Instability/spondylolisthesis. In this condition, one of the bones in your spine — called a vertebra — slides forward, out of its normal position.Fractures and trauma to the spine.Ruptured or herniated disc. The discs that separate the bones of our spine are a bit like jelly doughnuts. As we age, sometimes one of the discs weakens and breaks open, releasing some of the "jelly." When the jelly bulges out, it can put pressure on a nearby nerve.Spinal deformities. This can include scoliosis and kyphosis.Spinal tumors. This type of surgery requires a high degree of precision to remove as much of a tumor as possible without injuring the spinal cord and nearby nerves.Spinal stenosis. In your spine, there are openings where nerves pass through. These openings can grow narrower, putting pressure on the nerve.
