Dr. Gelfand is Board Certified by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has received a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. He received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1988. He received his medical degree from the Health Sciences Center at Syracuse in 1992 and then went on to complete his residency in Orthopaedics at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He then returned to Syracuse to complete a one year fellowship in Upper Extremity and Microvascular surgery in 1998, before moving to Annapolis. His current practice focus is on all aspects of care for the shoulder, elbow , and hand including joint replacement, arthroscopy, fracture care and microvascular procedures. Dr. Gelfand is the President and Founder of Suspension Orthopaedic Solutions(http://www.Suspensionortho.com), a medical device company that was started in 2008 to introduce innovative devices and methods for treating traumatic injuries of the shoulder. He holds several US patents and he has designed and developed several medical devices that are currently being used by orthopaedic surgeons throughout the country for the treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries. The company continues to develop technologies that are currently being incorporated into new products designed to treat injuries throughout the body. In 2005, Dr. Gelfand founded The Helping Hands Foundation(http://www.helpinghandsfoundation.us), a 501c(3) tax exempt organization that delivers international humanitarian relief through overseas surgical and educational missions. The foundation also collaborates with Anne Arundel Medical Center to bring patients in need from developing countries to Annapolis for reconstructive rocedures not available in their native lands. Dr. Gelfand was honored in September 2012 by SUNY Upstate Medical University as the Young Alumnus of the Year at the 137th College of Medicine Alumni Reunion in Syracuse, New York. A graduate of the class of 1992, Dr. Gelfand was honored by a group of 270 fellow alumni for his humanitarian contributions and his involvement with innovation in the field of orthopaedics His favorite thing to do outside of Orthopaedics is to spend time with his wife, Christina (also an Orthopaedic surgeon), and their four children. Dr. Gelfand is an avid cyclist and runner. In 2010 he competed in The Race Across America, an endurance cross-country bicycle race as a member of Teamdoc2doc. The 4 man, all physician team, took second place finishing the race from San Diego to Annapolis in 6 days 6 hours and 59 minutes.
