Dr. James J. York is a passionate orthopedic specialist who takes pride in his work and dedication to medical advocacy. Hailing from Schenectady, NY, Jim York moved to the bustling world of Washington D.C. where he completed his studies at Georgetown University and Georgetown University School of Medicine before pursuing his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. York remains steadfast in his commitment to advocating for patients and for young health professionals. During his time at Georgetown Medical School, he was part of a group that successfully lobbied Congress for legislation to help recipients of the Health Professions Scholarship Programs, including military and public health recipients. After serving three years in the Army, in 1988, Dr. James York entered private orthopaedic practice with Chesapeake Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine in Glen Burnie. He joined Anne Arundel Medical Group, Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Specialists in 2014. He specializes in reconstructive shoulder, knee, total joint, and cartilage transplant surgery. Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Subspecialty Certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, he is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Enjoying teaching, he has participated as an Associate Master Instructor at AANA Shoulder Surgical Courses and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. York was recognized by Annapolis Magazine as a “Top Doc” in 2011. Dr. York has also served in various leadership roles including Associate Chair of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Additionally, he has served as President of the Maryland Orthopaedic Association. As a member of the Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he served as Chair of the State Legislative and Regulatory Committee. This committee initiated and coordinated State level legislative initiatives across the country. In his personal life, Dr. York enjoys staying active and engaged in the community. He served as the team doctor for Archbishop Spalding High School for over two decades and provided game coverage, preseason physicals, and coach training seminars for youth athletic organizations, high schools, and Anne Arundel Community College. Dr. York coached youth soccer for the Severna Park Green Hornets organization for many years and earned a US Soccer Federation 'D' coaching license. In his free time, Dr. York can be found practicing martial arts - Chen Taijiquan and Chen Sword, playing golf, studying Gaelic Irish, and learning about military and medieval history. Dr. York has two grown daughters, Kerry York Lynn and Christine Carr York and 2 grandchildren. He and his wife, Maureen Carr, live in Millersville and are avid Ravens Fans.

Alexander Shushan, MD

Dr. Alex Shushan is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his pre-graduate studies at Tufts University where he majored in Biology, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, with additional recognition in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Other honors included membership in the Golden Key National Honor Society, Order of Omega, and awarding of the Anna Quincy Churchill Prize in Biology. Dr. Shushan attended The University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed a surgical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in NY, and continued his Residency training at Boston Medical Center. There he was awarded membership in the AOA Resident Leadership Forum, and honored at the New England Fracture Forum. While in residency, Dr. Shushan developed an appreciation for and skill in fracture care, but also found a passion for hand and upper extremity surgery. He went on to pursue a Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He completed this final segment of his formal training at Tufts Medical Center and New England Baptist Hospital, in Boston, MA. Dr. Shushan enjoys taking care of upper and lower extremity trauma, and specializes in Hand Surgery and Upper Extremity Surgery. He is a member of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery. He is active in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Dr. Shushan lives in Severna Park with his wife and three children. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and running.

Dr. Spirt has recently re-located from Michigan, where she practiced Orthopaedic Surgery for 9 years, before joining the group in August 2010. Dr. Spirt received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Orthopaedics at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, MN. Dr. Spirt completed her post-graduate fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Spirt also holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Iowa. Dr. Spirt specializes in the treatment of foot and ankle problems. She has published many medical papers on the biomechanics of cartilage and bone and ankle surgery and continues active research on the subject. Dr. Spirt is Board Certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Medical Association, and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. In her spare time Dr. Spirt enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. They enjoy many outdoor activities, especially kayaking, bicycling and skiing.

Originally from Kentucky, Dr. Patton completed his undergraduate studies in Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science degree in the treatment of spinal cord injury using human stem cells, as well as his Medical Degree, from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Patton completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Vermont. Prior to performing spine surgery in Annapolis, he completed his Spine Surgery fellowship training at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he worked with both Orthopaedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons. Dr. Patton specializes in the operative treatment of spine-related disorders, including degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, spinal tumors, as well as adult scoliosis and deformity. Dr. Patton is trained in traditional, time-proven procedures as well as newer, minimally invasive techniques that often allow for less pain after surgery. Dr. Patton graduated medical school as a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society and a strong background in research. As a resident, his orthopaedic trauma research was awarded top honors in the New England region, and nationally recognized by the American College of Surgeons. Currently, his interests focus on patient outcomes after spine surgery. Dr. Patton is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AO Spine North America, and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Benjamin M. Petre is a specialist in sports medicine focusing on the shoulder, hip, and knee. Dr. Petre enjoys taking care of all athletes, any age, and any level. Dr. Petre attended Colgate University for his undergraduate degree and then spent two years performing research on protein biophysics at Harvard prior to returning to medical school. Dr. Petre obtained an MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and then completed a residency program in Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. There, he received world class training in all areas of Orthopaedics. He is currently the team physician for the US Snowboard Team, US Ski Team and Annapolis High School. We are proud to announce that Dr. Petre has rejoined the Baltimore Orioles Orthopaedic Staff. He has previously worked with Johns Hopkins Lacrosse. Dr. Petre elected to pursue subspecialty training in Sports Medicine and was selected to attend the world-renowned Steadman Clinic Fellowship Program in Vail, Colorado. For one year, he trained with the top orthopaedic surgeons in the world for complex knee and shoulder surgery as well as hip arthroscopy. In addition to clinical sports medicine training, Dr. Petre worked on projects with the Steadman Philippon Research Institute publishing multiple peer reviewed clinical research papers. He served as a physician for the US Ski and Snowboard teams covering ski and snowboard events at Copper Mountain, Vail, Beaver Creek Mountain in addition to Queenstown, New Zealand, Valle, Nevada, Chile and The Snowboard World Championships in Oslo, Norway. Dr. Petre returns to Maryland to practice sports medicine orthopaedics at The Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centers. His interests include ACL reconstruction, posterolateral corner reconstruction, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder stabilization, shoulder replacements, and hip arthroscopy for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears. As one of the area’s best trained sports medicine surgeons, Dr. Petre has had more than 15 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts, was selected by the OTA as the teaching resident of the year, and has published a textbook on orthopedic injuries, emergencies and treatments. He is one of the only fellowship trained hip arthroscopists in the entire mid-atlantic region and offers arthroscopic treatment of FAI in addition to advanced labral reconstruction and repair techniques.
