Alexander Shushan, MD

Dr. Alex Shushan is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his pre-graduate studies at Tufts University where he majored in Biology, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, with additional recognition in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Other honors included membership in the Golden Key National Honor Society, Order of Omega, and awarding of the Anna Quincy Churchill Prize in Biology. Dr. Shushan attended The University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed a surgical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in NY, and continued his Residency training at Boston Medical Center. There he was awarded membership in the AOA Resident Leadership Forum, and honored at the New England Fracture Forum. While in residency, Dr. Shushan developed an appreciation for and skill in fracture care, but also found a passion for hand and upper extremity surgery. He went on to pursue a Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He completed this final segment of his formal training at Tufts Medical Center and New England Baptist Hospital, in Boston, MA. Dr. Shushan enjoys taking care of upper and lower extremity trauma, and specializes in Hand Surgery and Upper Extremity Surgery. He is a member of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery. He is active in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Dr. Shushan lives in Severna Park with his wife and three children. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and running.

Dr. Spirt has recently re-located from Michigan, where she practiced Orthopaedic Surgery for 9 years, before joining the group in August 2010. Dr. Spirt received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Orthopaedics at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, MN. Dr. Spirt completed her post-graduate fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Spirt also holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Iowa. Dr. Spirt specializes in the treatment of foot and ankle problems. She has published many medical papers on the biomechanics of cartilage and bone and ankle surgery and continues active research on the subject. Dr. Spirt is Board Certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Medical Association, and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. In her spare time Dr. Spirt enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. They enjoy many outdoor activities, especially kayaking, bicycling and skiing.

Originally from Kentucky, Dr. Patton completed his undergraduate studies in Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science degree in the treatment of spinal cord injury using human stem cells, as well as his Medical Degree, from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Patton completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Vermont. Prior to performing spine surgery in Annapolis, he completed his Spine Surgery fellowship training at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he worked with both Orthopaedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons. Dr. Patton specializes in the operative treatment of spine-related disorders, including degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, spinal tumors, as well as adult scoliosis and deformity. Dr. Patton is trained in traditional, time-proven procedures as well as newer, minimally invasive techniques that often allow for less pain after surgery. Dr. Patton graduated medical school as a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society and a strong background in research. As a resident, his orthopaedic trauma research was awarded top honors in the New England region, and nationally recognized by the American College of Surgeons. Currently, his interests focus on patient outcomes after spine surgery. Dr. Patton is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AO Spine North America, and the North American Spine Society.

Terry Everhart, MD, received his undergraduate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was also a Morehead Scholar. Dr. Everhart obtained his medical degree from The University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. His special interests are preventative medicine, chronic disease management, and sports medicine. He currently serves as an Associate Director for Luminis Health Primary Care. He enjoys all sports except curling, and would like to be a professional football player when he grows up. He lives in Crofton, Md. with his wife and 4 children.

Katie O’Connell attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. After practicing as an Academic Hospitalist in Honolulu for two years, she returned to the mainland and joined the Adult Hospitalists at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in 2011. She served as the Medical Director of the Hospitalist Group starting in 2015. With the inception of our Internal Medicine Residency Program, Katie changed roles and is now serving as the Associate Program Director. She serves as the Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and has an interest in assessments. Additionally, she is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine for The George Washington University of Medicine and Saba University School of Medicine, for which she serves as the LHAAMC Site Director for the Third Year Internal Medicine Clerkship. She remains active in hospital initiatives, including Readmissions Reduction and is serving as the Associate Chief of Medicine. One of her favorite roles is that of mentor for her Advisees. In her spare time, Katie enjoys cycling, running, skiing, and cuddling with her Miniature Schnauzer, Maggie, who happens to be the official IM Residency Wellbeing Puppy.
