PET-CT Scan
What Is a PET-CT Scan? Our diagnostic imaging center uses PET-CT scans to diagnose heart disease, brain disorders and, most often, cancer. It can help doctors find cancer in the body, see if cancer has spread or check if a tumor is shrinking with treatment. For cancer patients, a technologist injects a substance called a tracer. Cancer cells absorb more of this tracer than other cells do because cancer cells are more active and use more nutrients. For dementia or heart disease, doctors use a tracer with a substance that binds to the plaque that causes these diseases.Next, a scanner detects the radioactivity in the body. In a PET scan image, cancer cells or other disease markers show up as brighter spots.Today, almost all PET scans happen at the same time as a CT scan, which shows the structures of the body. This combination provides more context than a PET scan alone – showing doctors exactly where the cancer is within the body.

Ultrasound
We love to check out those growing babies, but did you know that ultrasounds aren't just for pregnancy? An ultrasound is a great way to see the structure of soft tissues and organs in the body. Your provider might order an ultrasound to see if you have a kidney stone or to check if you have an inflamed gallbladder. What Is an Ultrasound?Ultrasound is an imaging technology that uses sound waves. An ultrasound wand sends out safe, high-frequency sound waves (too high for the ear to hear). The sound waves bounce back at different speeds, based on the type and location of tissues they hit.The ultrasound wand captures those slightly changed sound waves as they return. Then a computer analyzes those sound waves to create a moving image. We use ultrasounds to assess blood flow, view internal organs and examine parts of the body. Common places ultrasounds look at are the abdomen, breasts, thyroid and prostate. Because the sound waves don't break through very far, ultrasounds don't offer the best view of bones or structures hidden behind a lot of soft tissue. This is why doctors only recommend ultrasound for certain reasons.Sometimes doctors try ultrasound first and then suggest another test if it doesn't help diagnose the problem.

Bone Density Scan
We may stop growing, but our bones don't stop changing. Our bodies replace old bone tissue with new bone to stay strong. But as we get older and wiser, our bodies are less efficient at this regeneration process. This means you can lose bone faster than you build it.When your bone density gets very low, it's called osteoporosis. It's often called a “silent disease" because you don't realize you have it until you break or fracture a bone. When you fracture a bone, especially the hip or spine, those glory years of retirement are, well, less glorious. It's harder to get around, see friends, travel or shop for your grandkids.A bone density scan, or DEXA screening, is a way to be proactive about your bone health. It tells you if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it. With this information, you can take steps to improve your bone health. Things like weight-bearing exercise or taking supplements or medications can help.Who Should Get a Bone Density Scan, or DEXA Test? The country's top medical organizations recommend women over age 65 go for bone density scans to check for osteoporosis. Some men, as well as younger women, may also benefit from the test if they have extra risk factors like:Taking certain medicationsGeneticsEarly menopauseHow healthily you eatWhether you smoke or drink heavilyYour doctor can help you decide if you should get a bone density scan. What Is a Bone Density Scan?A bone density scan uses low-dose x-rays to measure bone density. It uses less radiation than you're exposed to naturally from the sun in a day, so it's safe. The scanner sends two radiation beams – one that's absorbed by hard bone tissue and another that's absorbed by soft tissue. By comparing the two, doctors can determine bone density.
