What are fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that can grow in or on the uterus, affecting up to 77% of women during their childbearing years. These growths can vary greatly in size, number, and location, leading to a wide range of symptoms and experiences. For some women, fibroids can cause significant discomfort, including pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and a feeling of fullness in the abdomen. For others, fibroids may go unnoticed and symptom-free.

Regardless of the symptoms you’re experiencing, it’s essential to understand that fibroids are treatable, and you have options. At Luminis Health, we offer a variety of treatment solutions tailored to your specific needs. Among these is Acessa®, a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that targets fibroid tumors directly, shrinking them over time. Our team is here to guide you through your treatment journey, providing compassionate care in a modern, well-equipped facility right in your community.

Diagnosis & Treatments

Common Symptoms of Fibroids

Fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. Understanding these symptoms can help you recognize when it’s time to seek medical advice. Common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal, Lower Back, or Pelvic Pain: Persistent pain in these areas can be a sign of fibroids pressing on surrounding organs or nerves.
  • Swelling or a Sense of Fullness in the Abdomen or Pelvic Area: As fibroids grow, they can cause noticeable swelling or a feeling of heaviness.
  • Heavy and/or Painful Periods: Fibroids can lead to significantly heavier menstrual bleeding and prolonged periods, sometimes lasting more than a week.
  • Bleeding Between Periods: Unexpected bleeding outside of your regular menstrual cycle can also be a symptom of fibroids.
  • Pain During Sex: Fibroids located near the cervix or lower uterus can cause discomfort or pain during intercourse.
  • Frequent Urination or Difficulty Urinating: Large fibroids can press against the bladder, leading to an increased need to urinate or difficulty emptying the bladder completely.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk to a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms effectively and improve your quality of life.

Treatment Options for Fibroids

When it comes to treating fibroids, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment should reflect your unique health needs, lifestyle, and personal preferences. At Luminis Health, we offer a variety of treatment options, from traditional surgeries to the latest minimally invasive procedures:

A procedure to remove polyps, which are growths attached to the inner wall of the uterus. While polyps are not the same as fibroids, they can cause similar symptoms, such as abnormal bleeding. This procedure is less invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

A minimally invasive procedure where controlled heat is delivered directly to the fibroid tumor, causing it to shrink over time. This procedure preserves the uterus and is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing for a faster recovery compared to traditional surgeries.

A procedure that involves blocking the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. This is a uterine-sparing option that is performed by an interventional radiologist with minimal downtime.

Surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. This option is often chosen by women who wish to maintain their fertility. Myomectomy can be performed through various approaches, including open surgery, laparoscopic (minimally invasive), or hysteroscopic (through the cervix).

Surgical removal of the uterus, which provides a permanent solution to fibroids. This option is typically considered when other treatments have not been effective, or if the fibroids are particularly large or causing severe symptoms.
