Sarcoma Cancer
Sarcoma cancers are relatively rare. If you're diagnosed with one, you've probably got lots of questions and concerns. That's where we come in.What Is Sarcoma Cancer?A sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that begins in various tissues of the body. Most are soft tissue sarcomas, meaning they occur in fat, muscle, nerves, tendons, blood vessels or deep skin tissues. But sarcomas can begin in bones, too. Some soft tissue tumors are benign, meaning they aren't cancerous. They can't spread to other parts of the body like sarcoma cancer. Only an expert medical team can tell the difference between benign tumors and cancerous ones.Sarcoma cancers are rare. According to the American Cancer Society, U.S. doctors diagnose less than 14,000 soft tissue sarcomas each year. Most sarcomas happen in the feet, legs and arms, although they can occur elsewhere in the body too. Some types of sarcomas we treat at the Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute are:Chondrosarcoma, found in cartilage.Ewing sarcoma, which usually occurs in children and young adults in and around the bones.Fibrosarcoma, which starts in fibrous tissue in legs, arms or trunk.Kaposi sarcoma, which starts in the cells lining lymph or blood vessels.Leiomyosarcoma, which starts in smooth muscle tissue, often in the abdomen.Liposarcoma, which are tumors in fat tissue.Malignant fibrous histiocytoma, which are usually found in muscles and tendons.Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer seen most often in children and young adults.Rhabdomyosarcoma, which is a soft tissue sarcoma seen in children.

Skin Cancer
Receiving a diagnosis of skin cancer might feel overwhelming. The good news is, when caught early, most skin cancers are treatable. What Is Skin Cancer?Skin cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the skin cells. Skin cancer is very common. According to the American Cancer Society, it's by far the most common type of cancer. About 5.4 million people in the United States receive a skin cancer diagnosis every year.No form of skin cancer is good news, but some are more serious than others. Types of skin cancer include:Basal cell skin cancer, which is the most common type of skin cancer. Basal cell cancers develop in the outermost layer of the skin. Most are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays that come from the sun or indoor tanning.Squamous cell skin cancer, which is the second most common skin cancer. Squamous cell cancers grow near the surface of the skin. They usually appear in sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, neck and back of the hands.Melanoma, which occurs in the cells of the skin that produce pigment. These cells are called melanocytes. Melanocytes are present in and around our eyes so it is important to protect your eyes from sun exposure, too!Several types of rare skin cancers exist, including Merkel cell skin cancer and acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM). ALM is more common in people of color.

Ultrasound
We love to check out those growing babies, but did you know that ultrasounds aren't just for pregnancy? An ultrasound is a great way to see the structure of soft tissues and organs in the body. Your provider might order an ultrasound to see if you have a kidney stone or to check if you have an inflamed gallbladder. What Is an Ultrasound?Ultrasound is an imaging technology that uses sound waves. An ultrasound wand sends out safe, high-frequency sound waves (too high for the ear to hear). The sound waves bounce back at different speeds, based on the type and location of tissues they hit.The ultrasound wand captures those slightly changed sound waves as they return. Then a computer analyzes those sound waves to create a moving image. We use ultrasounds to assess blood flow, view internal organs and examine parts of the body. Common places ultrasounds look at are the abdomen, breasts, thyroid and prostate. Because the sound waves don't break through very far, ultrasounds don't offer the best view of bones or structures hidden behind a lot of soft tissue. This is why doctors only recommend ultrasound for certain reasons.Sometimes doctors try ultrasound first and then suggest another test if it doesn't help diagnose the problem.

MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a way to map out structures inside the body without using radiation. It helps your doctor see many things, like your:Blood vessels.Ligaments.Muscles.Nerves.Organs.Skeletal system.Luminis Health Imaging uses the latest MRI technology to maximize your comfort as we create crisp, clear images. How Do MRIs Work? You may have heard that water makes up about 60% of our bodies. What you may not know is the hydrogen atoms in water respond to electromagnetic energy around us. MRIs rely on this cool fact.MRIs use a magnetic field to align hydrogen atoms in the body. Then, the machine pulses out electromagnetic radio waves. This causes the atoms to spin. When the technologist turns off the radio frequency waves, the atoms realign. As structures in the body have different amounts of water, they release different amounts of energy during this process. The MRI sensor captures the energy waves to create images.MRI images not only show the various tissues of the body, but they can also highlight inflamed or cancerous areas. These have different water content than surrounding tissues.
