The mission of Luminis Health is to enhance the health of the people we serve. All physical therapists and staff who are a part of Luminis Health Physical Therapy work daily to uphold this mission and provide the best possible care to each and every patient. 

Our program’s mission is to provide a well-structured, diverse and comprehensive residency program that will culminate in residents attaining advanced clinical skills. This includes being able to provide evidence-based care with knowledge and expertise in the specialty area of orthopaedic physical therapy. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team in a hospital-based system that serves our community. The Luminis Health Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) as a post professional residency program for physical therapists in Orthopaedics.  

As part of a hospital system, you’ll have access to the accredited SAIL Center, surgical and physician observations, quality-based research, and weekly training with residents in other fields, which includes topics such as wellbeing, research, bioethics and systems of care.

The Luminis Health Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency program combines the current concepts for orthopaedic physical therapy curriculum, developed by the orthopaedic section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), with the MedBridge Orthopaedic Certified Specialist Preparation program for a comprehensive learning experience. Additionally, the curriculum includes weekly skills labs, surgery and physician shadowing, regular professional development, and daily interaction with a personal mentor. 

Curriculum Timeline: 

• 4 weeks of orientation and evidence-based practice
• 24 weeks of spine-head, maxillofacial, carinomandibular, cervical, thoracic and ribs, lumbr, pelvis, sacroilliac
• 12 weeks of lower extremity – hip, knee, foot and ankle, osteoarthritis
• 12 weeks of upper extremity – shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist and hand

Curriculum Outline: 

• Current concepts of orthopaedic physical therapy coursework
• MedBridge Orthopaedic Certified Specialist Preparation program
• Weekly surgical and/or physician shadowing
• Weekly manual skills labs
• Weekly co-treatment and rounding with mentor
• Completion of a quality improvement research project with an assigned research mentor
• Up to three cadaver dissections of spine, lower extremity and upper extremity
• Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) attendance and participation

• Choice of two sponsored in-house courses annually
• Current Concepts of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy

Luminis Health Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency applicants should possess the desire to further their orthopaedic physical therapy knowledge, and provide patient-centered and directed care. Additionally, applicants should be dedicated to bettering the field of physical therapy through evidence-based learning, research and quality improvement. 

Admissions Criteria: 

• Graduation from Commission on Accreditation on Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) Accredited Physical Therapy Program
• Attainment of Maryland physical therapy licensure prior to beginning the residency program
• Five references provided through our skills surveys including at least one clinical and one educational reference
• Submission of at least one letter of recommendation from one of the above references
• Completion of interview with the Residency Program Director and Residency Coordinator
• Current CPR certification
• Submission of a Personal Vision and Development Plan
• Submission of applications through RF-PTCAS and LHAAMC’s Careers webpage
• Compliance with all Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center employment requirements
