We treat adults and children with voice, speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders. We also treat children with feeding disorders, ADHD and autism.

Specialized Help for Speech, Language, Voice, Swallowing and Thinking Issues

Difficulty swallowing doesn't just rob you of the pleasure of eating. It can pose serious risks, including choking. Problems speaking or communicating your thoughts to others can be frustrating and exhausting. Living day to day with these issues can lead to emotional distress, like anxiety.

In kids, feeding disorders can slow normal growth. And a speech or language disorder can impair a child's ability to learn and succeed in school.

Our speech-language pathologists can help you or your child manage a speech, voice or swallowing disorder. We deliver outpatient rehabilitation care that helps you or your loved one achieve life-changing results. No matter where you are in your experience or recovery process, we can help.

Why Choose Luminis Health's Speech Pathology Team?

We'll work hard to lessen the toll that speech, language or voice problems can take on your life by:

  • Working closely with your entire care team. We'll consult with your radiation oncologist or other referring doctor to create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. But that's not all. We also work shoulder-to-shoulder with dietitians, occupational therapists and physical therapists to tackle your symptoms from many directions.

  • Coordinating your care. Juggling appointments with several different types of health professionals is time-consuming. We handle those arrangements if your doctor recommends physical therapy, occupational therapy or cancer rehabilitation.

  • Making access to care as painless as possible. With early morning, evening and weekend hours, you can choose appointments that fit your schedule. For some types of therapy, virtual visits are a convenient option. And you can connect with any of our locations and services through a single, dedicated phone number.

  • Offering therapists with specialized skills. Our speech therapists hone their expertise by treating many people who have the same specific problem. For example, if you lose your voice after treatment for throat cancer, we can match you with a therapist who specializes in this.

Diagnosis & Treatments

Some of our speech therapists focus on swallowing disorders — known medically as dysphagia. Symptoms can include difficulty chewing or feeling as if there's something stuck in your throat. Choking that occurs when you're eating or drinking can also signal a swallowing disorder.

We see patients with swallowing disorders resulting from many different conditions, including stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis and dementia. We also work with people who have cancer of the face, jaw, tongue or throat.

Based on an assessment of your swallowing ability, your therapist crafts a personalized treatment plan. You learn specific exercises to improve your ability to swallow, as well as techniques for making swallowing safer. Together with a registered dietitian, we ensure you're able to take in enough liquids and nutrients.

Our speech therapy team treats a full range of voice problems. Whether you have singer's nodes, irritable larynx (voice box) syndrome or another voice disorder, we can help.

During your first visit, your therapist performs a full voice evaluation. This involves asking you questions and watching and listening carefully as you breathe and speak. To address any issues revealed during this process, we put together a customized therapy plan.

Then, you'll attend four to six treatment sessions. During these visits you learn how your vocal cords work and how to best care for them. We also teach you breath control techniques and vocal exercises aimed at improving specific problems. You don't need any special equipment for these exercises, but they only work if you do them every day.

We also offer Lee Silverman Voice Treatment, known as LSVT LOUD, for people with Parkinson's disease and other nervous-system disorders. People with Parkinson's disease may think they're talking loud enough for others to hear when they're speaking very softly. Among other things, it teaches you how to "reset" your inner volume gauge while also using a stronger voice.

While babies' brains are wired to naturally learn to speak and understand language, the process doesn't always go as expected. The same applies for learning to suck, swallow and eat. Our pediatric speech pathologists specialize in improving these issues.

Children with feeding disorders may have difficulty getting food to their mouth or keeping it from falling out. For example, babies who are born with a cleft palate often can't generate enough suction to nurse. Our pediatric speech therapists provide advice on managing feeding difficulties and ensuring your child gets enough nourishment to thrive.

Some children have difficulty making speech sounds or sound patterns. Sometimes the muscles in the mouth and face don't move the right way. Or the muscles in the tongue or throat are too weak. In other children, the brain has difficulty planning movements involved in speech. Your pediatric speech therapist can devise a treatment plan that's tailored to your child's needs. For instance, this might include having your child practice making certain sounds.

Children with language disorders have difficulty understanding or expressing thoughts or ideas. For example, children with preschool speech disorders may have trouble understanding what people mean when they nod. Or they may have a hard time naming objects or asking questions. We use a wide range of techniques to build your child's ability to talk and understand speech.

Our pediatric speech pathology team also works with children who have conditions that affect thinking. Brain injury, autism, attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are just a few examples. Using different approaches, we lessen the impact symptoms of these conditions have on your child's life. For instance, some kids with ADD have trouble taking turns and paying attention to others. We help your child practice and strengthen this set of skills.

If your child has a speech or language disorder, you're an important part of the treatment team. We help you set treatment goals and learn how to provide support at home. You're also able to watch treatment sessions. Our clinics feature private, kid-friendly treatment rooms equipped with a one-way mirror and speaker system.
