- Provider76851Eric Weichel, MD, serves as the chief of the Ophthalmology Service at Anne Arundel Medical Center and takes a special interest is managing and treating macular and retina disease. He’s board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and licensed in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Dr. Weichel is also an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Services in Bethesda, Md, and is an active member of the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His career in medicine began with completing a combined six-year Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine program at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and then flourished during his 13 years with the US Army. Dr. Weichel first served as an intern of internal medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center, then as a resident in ophthalmology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and later as a fellow in vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during his tour of duty, he served as the Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Staff Vitreoretinal surgeon at the National Eye Institute/National Institute of Health. Dr. Weichel is widely published with more than 45 journal articles, interviews, textbook chapters, posters and videos to his credit — and has lectured both nationally and internationally. His research resume includes more than 25 studies and trials as principal investigator or co-investigator.
